Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly introverted and reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back, I can recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant concern for you. On my initial day moving into my residence, just a few days before the semester started, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to emerge and introduce myself to others. Sitting here now, I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, both here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that it’s always beneficial to make a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With the diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can sometimes be difficult for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel less competent. A few strategies aided me in navigating that sensation, one of which was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re confused about something, I can almost assure you there are others who also find it perplexing. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They are sympathetic to students’ struggles and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had earlier. I referenced taking leaps previously – I did embrace one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous steps you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this element of university is to make the most of the support available to you. You can never have too much assistance!

Overall, this year has impressed upon me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated through the support options provided by staff and fellow students. It’s enlightened me to the fact that I’m never alone, and it has demonstrated how to enjoy myself in the midst of pressures like exams and deadlines.
