By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself filled with anxiety and uncertainty about my future as I got ready to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unknown was a challenge for my typically shy self. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently the most daunting part of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a major worry for you. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just a few days before the term kicked off, I spent the entire day in my room, too fearful to step outside and introduce myself. Now, I can proudly state that I have formed some of the best friendships here at university and within my program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. What did I take away from this experience? Taking a leap at the start of the year is beneficial. If you feel unprepared, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaking events designed to facilitate connections with others. Also, embrace your true self. With such a varied group of individuals across the program and university, there will surely be people who align with you.
Another challenge was managing the workload and grappling with the complexity of the content. There was a clear increase in difficulty from A-levels, and an even steeper jump from the first to the second term. Being in this environment can shake your confidence; you might feel less capable compared to peers. Keep in mind, everyone shares this challenge. If you’re struggling to grasp something, it’s likely others are as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most vital lesson from the first year. Reach out for assistance from classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges that students encounter. They show empathy and keep communication open throughout the year regarding our concerns. I did not fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I spoke of taking leaps before – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is priceless. There are numerous pathways to get acquainted with staff, and it is one of the most beneficial things you can do! My primary takeaway is to capitalize on the support that is available. You can never have an excess of assistance!
In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension connected to university is frequently unfounded and can be eased by the support provided by both staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I am never on my own and how to have fun despite challenges such as exams and deadlines.
