Ten months ago, during October 2022, I was overcome with apprehension and doubt about embarking on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Facing the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the primary and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently a major worry for newcomers to university. On my initial day at my accommodation, just days ahead of classes starting, I remained in my room all day, too daunted to step out and meet others. Today, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships here at the university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, beginning with brief conversations with those facing similar experiences. What did I realize? It’s preferable to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. Also, just be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the academic load and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was notably steep, and an even greater leap occurred from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can test your confidence; you might feel out of place compared to your peers. Keep in mind, everyone is experiencing similar feelings. If something confuses you, chances are others are puzzled as well. Thus, seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson from the first year. Reach out to both classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students face. They show understanding and keep communication open throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances – I did by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to engage with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best steps you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much help!
In conclusion, this year has taught me that anxieties about university are often baseless and can be eased with the support provided by staff and peers. I’ve realized that I’m never alone and have learned how to enjoy myself despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
