Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Reflecting back, I realize it has been a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most formidable challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it may be one of your greatest concerns. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days before classes began, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room because I felt too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in some small talk with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I gain from this experience? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breaking and events to help you establish connections. I also discovered that if you can embody one quality, let it be authenticity. There are numerous diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle I had to navigate was the intensifying workload and complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always conducive to your self-confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things assisted me in dealing with that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others who feel the same way. So, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to internalize during your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and the staff!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely wish for you to succeed and comprehend that students face difficulties. They relate to students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I did not fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to get to know the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are many avenues to connect with staff, and it’s certainly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this component of university life is to leverage the assistance available to you. You can never have too much help!

Overall, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be alleviated with the numerous support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has demonstrated how to find enjoyment even alongside stressors such as exams and deadlines.
