Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was accustomed to. Reflecting back, I recognize an academic year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is definitely one of the more daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room as I felt too intimidated to step outside and meet others. Sitting here today, however, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I have discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in casual conversation with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I glean? I learned that taking a jump at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, I learned that if you can be anything, be yourself. There is such a wide array of diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you are sure to find kindred spirits.

Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something confounds you, I can almost assure you that there are several others who are also puzzled. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to take away in the first year. Ask for support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke previously about taking leaps – I did take one at the onset of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous methods to become acquainted with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway regarding this facet of university is to leverage the assistance you’re being provided. You can never have an excess of it!

Overall, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are almost always unfounded and can be mitigated through the multitude of support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never solitary, and it’s educated me on how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
