Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Diving headfirst into the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was accustomed to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a multitude of enjoyable experiences! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the first and most formidable challenges was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of entering university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it could be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, just days before the term began, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, far too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve established a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with some casual conversations with individuals in similar positions. So, what did I discover? I realized that it’s always advisable to take a plunge at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities and events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can be one thing, be authentic. With such a diverse group of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable elevation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment isn’t always easy for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few elements helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that there are others who are equally confused. Thus, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I embraced one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly advantageous. There are numerous avenues to get familiar with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My main lesson from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the assistance available to you. You can never have too much!
In a broader sense, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often ungrounded and can be mitigated through the various support resources offered by faculty and fellow students. It’s shown me that I’m never truly alone and how to find joy amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
