Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted to me, and what is my current situation?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This often ranks as one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as someone considering enrollment, it might be among your greatest concerns. On the day I moved into my dorm, a few days prior to the semester’s start, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. However, today I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever experienced here at university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So what insight did I gain? I discovered that it’s important to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not fully prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker sessions and activities designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one trait, let it be authenticity. With the variety of individuals spanning across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.
Another challenge I faced was the volume of assignments and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a shift from A-levels, and in several respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the subsequent one. Being thrust into such a setting can test your self-esteem; witnessing others study might leave you feeling inadequate. A few strategies helped alleviate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If something is unclear to you, I can almost guarantee that others are also puzzled. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and instructors!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize the challenges students face. They show empathy towards students and maintain open communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t make use of the pastoral support until the year’s close, but I regret not doing so earlier. I referred to taking leaps earlier – at the beginning of the year, I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the smartest choices you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance you’re offered. You can never have too much!
Generally, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both leading up to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the support systems available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated, and it’s demonstrated how to relish my time while managing pressures such as exams and deadlines.
