Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not a situation I was used to, given my previously timid and reserved nature. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and fun. But what insights has this year provided, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently among the most frightening aspects of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of classes starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. However, today, I can confidently assert that I have made some of the finest friends I’ve ever known, here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I glean? I discovered that it’s beneficial to take a risk at the start of the year. If you’re not fully prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are ample ice-breaker activities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody anything, be yourself. With so many diverse individuals at the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a significant transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more considerable jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can test your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me in overcoming that sensation was the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you struggle to grasp something, I can almost assure you that others are too. So, seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and keep in regular contact throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to build relationships with the staff, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased through the variety of support that staff and fellow students offer. It’s taught me that I am never alone, and it has revealed how to enjoy myself even amid pressures like exams and deadlines.
