Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into uncertainty was not something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what have I gained from this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the foremost and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating elements of beginning university, and if you’re looking at this as a prospective student, it might be one of your primary worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, far too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it only required striking up casual conversations with others in similar predicaments. So, what has this taught me? I learned that it’s crucial to take that jump at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities to assist you in connecting with fellow students. I also realized that above all else, it’s vital to be authentic. With such a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to come across those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and, in some respects, an even larger shift from the first term to the subsequent one. Being immersed in such an environment can sometimes challenge your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can almost assure you there are others who are equally puzzled. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may well be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out for help from fellow students and faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They sympathize with our struggles and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had accessed it sooner. I referred to taking leaps earlier – I took one at the year’s onset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are myriad opportunities to engage with staff, and it’s certainly one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to leverage the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!

In conclusion, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often misplaced and can be eased through the numerous support avenues provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never isolated, and it has illustrated how to find joy amid the stressors of exams and deadlines.
