Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously introverted and timid self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained during this year, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This often stands as one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you happen to be a prospective student reading this, it might be among your greatest worries. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term commencing, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Sitting here today, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, both within this university and among my peers in the course. I discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all kicked off with engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I grasp? I learned that taking a chance at the start of the year is the best approach. If you’re not completely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be genuine. There are a multitude of diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you’re sure to encounter people like yourself.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a noticeable increase compared to A-levels, and in some regards, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment isn’t always a boost for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reassurance that everyone shares the same experience. If something confuses you, I can almost guarantee there are others who are also puzzled. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are phenomenal. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter challenges. They show understanding towards students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I did take one at the year’s onset by assuming the role of a year well-being representative. This opportunity enabled me to become acquainted with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can undertake for your own benefit! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support available to you. You can never have an excess of it!

Ultimately, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated with the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It’s shown me that I’m never solitary, and it has illustrated how to find joy amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
