Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. As a first-year student, I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyable experiences! So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand today?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it might resonate with you as a significant worry. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too scared to go out and introduce myself. Yet today, I can proudly declare that I have made some of the closest friends I’ve ever had here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with peers in similar circumstances. So, what did I come to understand? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is incredibly advantageous. If you don’t feel ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events designed to help you interact with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, let it be your true self. With such a diverse group of individuals in the program and university, you’re sure to find those who vibe with you.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a significant ramp-up from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more substantial jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can be taxing for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things helped me navigate through those feelings, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something doesn’t make sense, I can almost assure you that others are in the same situation. So, ask for assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson from the first year. Seek aid from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my following point. The faculty within the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They understand students’ struggles and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done it earlier. I mentioned previously about taking chances – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it is definitely one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this section of university life is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are usually misplaced and can be mitigated through the support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to enjoy myself despite challenges like exams and deadlines.
