Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Jumping into the deep end was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a time marked by personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current state?

One of the earliest and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more nerve-wracking parts of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it might be one of your main worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room because I was too daunted to step out and meet others. However, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I have made some of the finest friends I have ever known, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was some casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this experience? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the start of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uncomfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities and events to help you engage with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be yourself. With so many diverse individuals across the program and university, you are sure to encounter peers who share your qualities.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the difficulty of the material. There was indeed a significant leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being plunged into such an environment can sometimes be tough on your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate in comparison. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one of which was the awareness that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you struggle to grasp a topic, I can nearly guarantee there are at least a handful of others who are also confused. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Request assistance from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want to see you thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They show compassion towards students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. Although I didn’t truly leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, I regret not doing so earlier. I spoke about taking risks at the beginning; I did take a step by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are many avenues to get acquainted with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to utilize the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!

Overall, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be mitigated through the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I am never alone, and it has taught me how to have fun alongside the stresses of exams and deadlines.
