Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed by nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Stepping into the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what have I gleaned from this year, and what is my current status?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is undeniably one of the more fearsome elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here now, I can confidently assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all of which began with engaging in small talk with individuals in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? I’ve learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel ready or at ease, fret not! There will be ample icebreaker opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I’ve also realized that if you can embody one quality, it should be authenticity. With a myriad of diverse individuals across the course and university, you’re bound to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the volume of work and complexity of content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in certain aspects, a considerably larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always beneficial for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can almost assure you there are others who don’t grasp it either. Thus, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your peers and the staff!

This leads me to my subsequent observation. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students face challenges. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by serving as a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to get acquainted with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most rewarding actions you can take for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance you’re offered. You can never receive too much!

In a broader sense, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both leading up to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be mitigated through the various support options available from staff and fellow students. It’s shown me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
