By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Taking a plunge into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved persona was prepared for. Looking back at the last academic year, I perceive a journey of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it might be among your greatest worries. On my first day of settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to classes commencing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. Yet, as I sit here today, I can boldfully affirm that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I learn? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the onset of the year. If you’re not entirely ready or at ease, worry not! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events to facilitate your connection with others. I also learned that if you can embody one quality, let it be authenticity. With the vast array of individuals across the course and the university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was indeed a noticeable leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can take a toll on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me overcome that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you find something unclear, I can almost assure you that several others are equally perplexed. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy toward students and engage in continuous communication with us regarding our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t particularly utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I embraced one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to get to know the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for your own benefit! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to seize the opportunities for assistance presented to you. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has revealed that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated by the numerous support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never isolated and how to find joy amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
