By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was just starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh first-year student. Jumping into unfamiliar territory was something my formerly reserved self had little experience with. Looking back now, I realize the year has been filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I currently stand?

One of the foremost and most intimidating challenges was to build friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On the first day of moving into my accommodation, just before the term started, I remained in my room all day, too intimidated to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at this university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? It’s beneficial to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t stress! There are numerous ice-breaker events designed to foster connections with others. Additionally, just be authentic. With such a diverse community across the program and university, you’re sure to find others who share your interests.

Another obstacle was the volume of coursework and the complexity of the material. There was a noticeable increase in difficulty from A-levels, and an even more significant leap from the first to the second term. Being in this kind of environment can shake your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was recalling that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re confused about something, it’s likely that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most essential lesson from the first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges that students encounter. They are understanding and maintain steady communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had started utilizing it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with support from staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never alone and how to enjoy myself even amid pressures such as exams and deadlines.
