Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide, and where do I currently stand?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most intimidating elements of commencing university, and if you are a potential student, it might be one of your major concerns. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term starting, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I can proudly assert that I have made some of the finest friends I’ve ever known at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with some casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that taking a leap early in the year is beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that above all, you should be yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to encounter others like you.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. The transition from A-levels was indeed significant, and in some respects, the leap from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone finds themselves in a similar situation. If you don’t comprehend something, I can almost assure you that others are equally confused. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Seek help from your classmates and the instructors!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students encounter difficulties. They relate to the students and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support available until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are many avenues to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it is undeniably one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the opportunity for assistance offered. You can never have too much help!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated through the support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It’s taught me that I am never isolated and how to find joy even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
