Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was poised to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back, I recognize a year enriched with personal development, obstacles, and a significant amount of enjoyment! However, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most formidable challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most intimidating facets of commencing university, and if you are a prospective student, it may be one of your greatest concerns. On my very first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the commencement of the term, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, I can proudly assert that I’ve made some wonderful friends here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with others in similar situations. What did I discover? It’s beneficial to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, no worries! There will be ample ice-breaker events designed to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, be true to yourself. With a variety of unique individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who share your mindset.
Another hurdle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable shift from A-levels, and an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Navigating such an environment can challenge your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. What aided me was recalling that everyone shares similar experiences. If something is unclear, chances are others may be experiencing the same issue. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson of the first year. Reach out to fellow students and faculty for support!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to excel and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the year was nearly finished, but I wish I had started earlier. Speaking of taking leaps – I made one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s among the best things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson is to take full advantage of the support available. You can never receive too much assistance!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety about university are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated through the support offered by staff and peers. I’ve learned I am never alone, and I’ve learned to find enjoyment even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
