Ten months prior, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not what my formerly shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of starting university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it might be a significant worry for you. On the inaugural day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Nowadays, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s beneficial to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to aid you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, it’s to be yourself. With such a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you are sure to find individuals like you.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and the difficulty of the material. There was a noticeable leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the affirmation that everyone shares the same experience. If something is unclear, I can virtually assure you there are others who also don’t grasp it. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to excel and recognize that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had started sooner. I spoke of taking leaps earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to familiarize myself with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the assistance offered to you. You can never have too much support!
All in all, this year has illustrated that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated with the various support systems available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
