By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my formerly introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal growth, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening facets of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be among your top worries. On my initial day moving into my lodging, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too fearful to step outside and meet others. Today, though, I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the finest friendships here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what did I take away? It’s wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not ready or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. Also, if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a variety of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re certain to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and in many ways, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find something confusing, I can nearly guarantee others do too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year. Reach out to both peers and faculty!

This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges that students encounter. They show understanding and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had.
