Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future as I geared up to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my formerly timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may pose a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and interact with others. Yet today, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful connections here at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what have I discovered? I learned that it’s beneficial to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing you can be, just be yourself. With such a wide range of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another significant challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a setting can test your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re struggling with something, I can almost assure you that others are as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to grasp in your initial year. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is outstanding. They are dedicated to your success and recognize the challenges students contend with. They sympathize with us and maintain consistent communication throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the support available until the end of the academic year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position helped me connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are many avenues to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this university experience is to seize the help provided. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the multitude of support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It’s shown me that I’m never isolated and how to find joy despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
