Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of commencing my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved nature was familiar with. Reflecting on the previous academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I find myself now?

One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re a potential student reading this, it might rank as one of your greatest concerns. On my first day of moving into my accommodations, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day hiding in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet people. Sitting here now, I can assertively declare that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, at this university and within this program. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with a bit of chit-chat with others in comparable situations. So, what have I gleaned? I discovered that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate your connection with others. I’ve also realized that if you can be anything, be yourself. With such a vast array of people throughout the course and university, you’re bound to encounter like-minded individuals.

Another challenge was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be tough for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you find something challenging, I can almost assure you that others are struggling too. Hence, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Ask for help from peers and staff!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with students and keep communication open with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referred to taking leaps earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are various avenues to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the smartest decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to seize the assistance offered to you. You can never receive too much!

Overall, this year has imparted to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased by the numerous support resources available through staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has shown me how to find joy even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
