Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I felt nervous and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was just about to start my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was familiar with. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This often ranks as one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be one of your greatest concerns. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the semester starting, I spent the whole day in my room, feeling too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can say with assurance that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all by striking up brief conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I gain from this experience? I learned that taking a chance right at the beginning of the year is beneficial. If you’re not yet ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking events to assist you in connecting with others. Also, if there’s one thing you can be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse group of people throughout the course and university, you are sure to meet like-minded peers.
An additional hurdle was the volume and complexity of the coursework. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first semester to the latter. Being in such an environment can certainly take a toll on your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. What helped me was recalling that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others don’t either. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the instructors!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and keep in constant touch with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for your sake! My main takeaway is to make use of the support available. You can never have too much assistance!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often misplaced and can be mitigated by the support from staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I am never alone and how to find joy even amid pressures like exams and deadlines.
