Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not exactly what my previously shy and quiet self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal growth, challenges, and fun. But what insights have I gained, and where do I currently find myself?

One of the first and most formidable hurdles was forming friendships. This certainly ranks as one of the more frightening elements of embarking on university life, and if you’re an incoming student, it might weigh heavily on your mind. On my move-in day, just days prior to the semester commencing, I spent the entire day cocooned in my room, too anxious to step out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some incredible friendships here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with brief conversations with others experiencing similar circumstances. So, what did I come to understand? I realized that taking a chance at the start of the year can always pay off. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker activities and events will help you interact with others. I also understood that being authentic is vital. With such a diverse array of individuals within the course and university, you’re sure to find those who click with you.

Another obstacle involved the intensity of the workload and the complexities of the content. The transition from A-levels was significant, and in some respects, the leap from the first term to the second was even steeper. Being placed in such an environment can challenge your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel as though you don’t measure up. A few strategies helped me navigate this feeling, one being the reassurance that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something is unclear, I can nearly guarantee that others are also struggling with it. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most essential skill to cultivate in your first year. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are wonderful. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They show empathy towards us and maintain consistent communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I took one at the year’s onset by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to fully utilize the support available. You can never receive too much assistance!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, whether before or during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the various support systems in place from both staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
