Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the cusp of embarking on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. When I reflect on the past year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is among the most daunting facets of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it may rank among your top concerns. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the commencement of classes, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and interact. Now, I can proudly assert that I have formed some of the finest friendships I have ever experienced at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with engaging in casual conversation with individuals in comparable situations. So, what have I learned? I realized that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re feeling unprepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breakers and events designed to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, I discovered that if you can embrace one quality, it should be authenticity. With a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to meet those who share your interests.

An additional challenge was the intensity and complexity of the workload. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even more significant shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find yourself puzzled by something, you can almost bet others are too. Therefore, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Seek help from both your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I did not truly utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to interact with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to leverage the support being offered to you. You can never have excessively!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated by the various support mechanisms available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find joy despite stressors such as exams and deadlines.
