Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved personality was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment. But what have I discovered, and where do I stand today?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re a future student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my first day moving into my accommodations, just prior to the term commencing, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I gain? It’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you aren’t prepared or don’t feel at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that authenticity is essential. With so many varied individuals across the course and the university, you’re sure to encounter those who are like you.
Another difficulty was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was indeed a noticeable jump from A-levels, and in many ways, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a challenging environment can be hard on your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in dealing with that sensation, one being the recognition that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, it’s almost certain that others don’t either. Therefore, seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out to peers and faculty for help!
That brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and comprehend the challenges that students encounter. They understand and keep ongoing communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the assistance available. You can’t have too much!
In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has made me realize that I’m never alone and demonstrated how to have fun despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
