Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the cusp of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously bashful and introverted self was accustomed to. Looking back, I recognize a year abundant with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what have I learned, and what is my current status?

One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re a potential student, it might be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into my residence, mere days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself. Yet, sitting here now, I can assert with confidence that I have formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can be one thing, always be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re certain to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was definitely a significant transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger shift from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can be hard on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly guarantee others are struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Request help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They are empathetic towards us and maintain ongoing communication regarding our concerns throughout the year. I did not take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to utilize the support provided. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has imparted to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the support systems available from faculty and classmates. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
