By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious and unsure as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Stepping into uncharted territory was unfamiliar to my previously reserved self. Looking back on the last academic year, I recognize a path filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was building friendships. This aspect can be one of the most daunting when starting university, and if you’re a potential student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day at my accommodation, a few days ahead of classes kicking off, I remained in my room the entire day, too daunted to step outside and meet new people. Now, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at the university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. What have I discovered? It’s beneficial to take the plunge at the start of the year. If you don’t feel prepared, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to facilitate connections with others. Also, be yourself. With such a diverse group at the university, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was the volume of work and difficulty of content. The transition from A-levels was quite significant, and the leap from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. Being in such a setting can shake your confidence; you might feel less capable compared to your peers. Keep in mind that everyone is facing the same challenges. If something is unclear, chances are that others are struggling as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is perhaps the most vital lesson from the first year. Reach out for help from fellow students and staff!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the issues that students encounter. They show understanding and keep open lines of communication with us regarding our challenges. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I talked about taking leaps – one such leap was stepping into the role of a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and this is one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to seize the assistance provided. There’s no such thing as too much help!

In conclusion, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness about university are often baseless and can be eased with the support available from staff and fellow students. I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly alone and that I can find enjoyment even amid pressures like exams and deadlines.
