Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my once timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyable experiences! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I find myself now?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This often ranks as one of the most challenging parts of beginning university, and if you’re a student preparing for this transition, it might be a major source of anxiety. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the start of classes, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. Today, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the most cherished friendships here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, beginning with casual conversations with others in alike circumstances. So, what lessons did I glean? I learned that taking the plunge at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and activities designed to help you engage with others. I also found that above all, being authentic is key. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another difficulty was the volume of work and complexity of the content. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such a demanding atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can nearly guarantee there are others who are also puzzled. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace during your first year. Reach out to your colleagues and the faculty!
This brings me to my subsequent observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely wish to see you thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy toward students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully leverage the support services until later in the year, and I wish I had taken advantage of them earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I made one at the start of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are many opportunities to get acquainted with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the wisest things you can do for your own benefit! My key takeaway from this segment of university life is to fully utilize the support available to you. You can never receive too much help!
Ultimately, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often ungrounded and can be mitigated through the vast array of support provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and illustrated how to find joy amidst challenges like exams and deadlines.
