By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty as I started my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly reserved self was prepared for. Looking back now, I recognize a year characterized by personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This can be one of the most daunting facets of beginning university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, just days prior to the term’s start, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Today, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships during my time at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I taken away from this? It’s wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or feel uneasy, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breakers and activities to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that being your true self is essential. With such a diverse group of people in the program and at the university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a marked increase from A-levels, and an even more significant leap from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can be challenging for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. What supported me was the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re puzzled by something, it’s likely that others are as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson of the first year. Reach out to peers and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They truly want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy and keep in touch with us throughout the year to address our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. I mentioned earlier the importance of taking risks – I embraced one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position helped me become acquainted with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are many avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s among the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to utilize the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated through the support provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I’m never alone and how to enjoy myself despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
