Authored by Dawson La, Master of Engineering in Materials Science and Engineering

Almost a year back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and quiet nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyable experiences! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the foremost and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently regarded as one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are reading this as an incoming student, it may be one of your foremost worries. On my inaugural day of moving into my residence, several days prior to the term’s initiation, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too intimidated to venture out and introduce myself to others. Nevertheless, today I can assert with confidence that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever encountered, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all ignited with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what’s the lesson here? I realized that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking occasions and events to facilitate connections with others. I’ve also come to understand that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle I faced was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable escalation from A-levels and, in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first semester to the second. Being immersed in such an atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few aspects aided me in navigating that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is in the same situation. If there’s something you don’t grasp, I can nearly assure you that there are others who also lack understanding. Therefore, seek assistance. This could very well be the most crucial lesson to glean in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students face challenges. They empathize with us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t truly engage with the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, yet I wish I had utilized it earlier. I spoke of taking leaps initially; I took one by stepping up as a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is enormously beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have an excess of it!

In summary, this year has illustrated that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased by the varied support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
