Twelve months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Engaging with the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was accustomed to. Reflecting back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year imparted, and what is my current state?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of embarking on university life, and if you are an incoming student reading this, it may be one of your primary worries. During my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the commencement of classes, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to venture out and socialize. Now, I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had during my time at university and in my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with people in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I’ve come to understand that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is often the best approach. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and activities to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, it’s to be yourself. With such a wide range of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find others like you.
Another hurdle was managing the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere can challenge your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly assure you that others are struggling as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to acquire in your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to excel and understand the challenges students face. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us about our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referred to taking leaps earlier – I embraced one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to become acquainted with the staff, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with the faculty, and it’s one of the finest actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this facet of university is to utilize the assistance you are provided. You can never have an excess!
In summary, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the support available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never isolated and how to relish myself despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
