Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of embarking on my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a first-year student. Plunging into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Now, looking back, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and a ton of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of entering university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my moving-in day, a few days ahead of the classes starting, I spent the whole day isolated in my room, too nervous to step out and introduce myself to others. However, now I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual chats with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I learn? I discovered that taking a chance at the year’s start is always beneficial. If you’re feeling unprepared or uncomfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities to help you connect with others. I also learned that if you can be anything, just be yourself. With such a variety of people in the program and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge I faced was the intensity of the workload and the difficulty of content. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in several aspects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrown into this atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might notice others studying and feel less competent. A few strategies helped me cope with that feeling, one being the realization that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you that there are others who are equally baffled. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Seek guidance from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials is outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and keep ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really tap into the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking chances previously – I made one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to utilize the assistance available to you. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated with the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I’m never truly alone and how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
