Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back on the last academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re a potential student reading this, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term’s start, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too scared to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar predicaments. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a plunge at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events designed to break the ice and help you connect with fellow students. I also discovered that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to find like-minded people.

Another obstacle was the sheer amount of work and the complexity of the content. There was undeniably a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can challenge your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me navigate through that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp something, you can almost bet that others are as well. So, reach out for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to seek help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students can face difficulties. They show understanding towards students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I made one at the start of the year by stepping up as a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are plenty of ways to familiarize yourself with staff, and this is certainly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this facet of university life is to leverage the support you are offered. You can never have too much!

Ultimately, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased through the various support channels available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never truly alone, and it has illustrated how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
