Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening elements of commencing university, and if you’re considering this as a prospective student, it may rank high on your list of worries. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, just days prior to the term’s start, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too intimidated to step out and meet others. Today, however, I can confidently assert that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all ignited by some casual conversation with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I glean from this experience? I discerned that making a bold move at the year’s beginning is always beneficial. If you’re not entirely ready or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events aimed at fostering interaction with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With such a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter others like yourself.

Another hurdle was the workload and difficulty of the content. There was undeniably a significant shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even steeper jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be a challenge for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is in a similar situation. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you there are others who are equally puzzled. Therefore, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Seek help from both your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware that students face challenges. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I did not fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks at the start; I indeed took a step by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the finest things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to leverage the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that anxiety, both prior to and during university, is often unfounded and can be mitigated through the vast array of support options provided by faculty and peers. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment amid pressures like exams and deadlines.
