Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with nerves, anxiety, and doubt about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Plunging into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and an abundance of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is usually one of the most frightening elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term’s start, I spent the whole day in my room, too fearful to go out and meet new people. However, now I can say with confidence that I have formed some of the finest friendships I have ever experienced at this university and on this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, beginning with light conversations with others in similar predicaments. So, what was my takeaway? I realized that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not ready or feel uneasy, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events designed to help you connect. I also understood that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With the variety of individuals across the course and university, you will surely encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge I encountered was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable leap from A-levels, and in many respects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can shake your confidence; seeing others study may leave you feeling inadequate. Several aspects assisted me during that period, one being the realization that everyone shares the same experience. If something isn’t clear, I can almost assure you that there are many others who feel the same way. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are incredible. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students face challenges. They are empathetic and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year was coming to a close, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps previously – I did make one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to get acquainted with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary message from this part of university is to take full advantage of the assistance available. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the various support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and has demonstrated how to find enjoyment amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
