Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and withdrawn self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year abundant with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening aspects of commencing university, and if you are an aspiring student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term’s start, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and interact with others. However, today I can assertively state that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, do not fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned to embrace my true self. With such a diverse array of people across the program and university, you’re sure to find individuals who share your mindset.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and the difficulty of the material. There was definitely an escalation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first semester to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few factors helped me navigate through this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If you’re struggling to understand something, I can nearly guarantee that others are too. Therefore, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the teaching staff!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They are invested in your success and acknowledge the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and ensure ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I did not fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I noted earlier about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are countless ways to engage with faculty, and it’s among the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to embrace the assistance provided. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has imparted the lesson that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are typically baseless and can be mitigated by the various support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy despite challenges such as exams and deadlines.
