Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I realize that this academic year has been filled with personal growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is assuredly one of the more daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as an aspiring student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too afraid to step outside and meet others. However, sitting here today, I can assuredly say that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, both at this university and in this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with people in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a step forward at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events designed to help you bond with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With so many varied individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was definitely a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more substantial jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment isn’t always easy on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me to overcome that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same journey. If something doesn’t make sense, I can almost guarantee that others are in the same position. So, ask for assistance. This could be the single most crucial lesson to take away from the first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had made use of it earlier. I mentioned before about taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are many ways to engage with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support available. You can never have too much!

Overall, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be mitigated with the numerous support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never truly alone, and it’s demonstrated how to have fun despite pressure from exams and deadlines.
