Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of embarking on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back at the past academic year, I perceive a path of personal development, challenges, and considerable enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking aspects of beginning university, and if you are a prospective student reading this, it may be one of your major concerns. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Nevertheless, reflecting on today, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships I could ever hope for at this university and within this program. I’ve found a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with some casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I discovered that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t be alarmed! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that being authentic is the most effective method. With such a diverse range of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter kindred spirits.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was undeniably a significant increase from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even more considerable jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can take a toll on your self-confidence; you might notice others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something unclear, I can almost assure you that there are others who feel the same. So, seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They relate to us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with faculty members, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this dimension of university life is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be mitigated with the various support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to have fun despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
