Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what lay ahead. As I prepared to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student, the leap into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I now see a year that was rich in personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?
One of the earliest and most overwhelming obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting aspects of launching into university life, and if you’re perusing this as a potential student, it might be one of your main worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the semester’s start, I spent the whole day cooped up in my room as I felt too daunted to step out and introduce myself to anyone. Yet, sitting here now, I can say with confidence that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with some casual conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what’s the lesson? I learned that it’s always best to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not feeling entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking occasions and events designed to help you engage with others. I also discovered that if you can be one thing, it’s to be yourself. With so many diverse individuals in the program and university, you’re likely to find souls similar to yours.
Another challenge I needed to tackle was the difficulty of the workload and content. There was undoubtedly a significant leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more considerable jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can often dent your confidence; you might observe your peers studying and feel inadequate. A few things helped me navigate that sensation, one being the understanding that everyone is in the same predicament as you. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others who share your confusion. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial skill to master in your first year. Reach out for help from both your colleagues and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to prosper and acknowledge that students face difficulties. They are sympathetic to students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t really make use of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I spoke of taking leaps at the outset; I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous methods to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s certainly one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary insight from this aspect of university life is to seize the help being offered. You can never have too much!
On a broader scale, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are almost universally baseless and can be mitigated by the myriad support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never truly alone, and it has taught me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
