Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious, apprehensive, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was preparing to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh first-year student. Jumping straight into the deep end wasn’t something my previously introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a period filled with personal growth, challenges, and enjoyment! But what have I gained from this year, and where do I stand now?
One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing challenges was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating components of starting university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it might be a significant concern for you. On the first day of settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term beginning, I spent an entire day sequestered in my room due to feeling too daunted to venture out and greet others. However, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve found a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with making small talk with others in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel fully prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaker sessions and activities designed to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing to be, it’s your authentic self. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.
Another challenge lay in the demands of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into that kind of environment can be tough on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that sentiment, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If something isn’t clear to you, I can almost assure you that at least a handful of others are also puzzled. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and understand that students face difficulties. They show compassion towards students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of them earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the onset of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this segment of university life is to seize the assistance being offered to you. You can never have too much support!
Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both in the lead-up to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be alleviated through the extensive support available from faculty and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never truly alone, and it’s helped me learn how to find joy amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
