Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! So, what has this year imparted to me, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more frightening facets of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your largest apprehensions. On the initial day of moving into my accommodations, a few days prior to the semester commencing, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too nervous to venture out and meet new people. However, sitting here today, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this course. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and it all kicked off with making casual conversation with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that it’s always wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not quite prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to aid you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With such a diverse group of people throughout the course and university, you’re certain to encounter individuals like yourself.

Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere isn’t always conducive to your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors assisted me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same situation. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you there are others who also find it perplexing. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb in the first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials is outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. I referenced taking risks earlier – I did take one at the onset of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance provided. You can never have an excess!

In a broader perspective, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be eased with the plethora of support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and has taught me how to enjoy myself amidst stressors like examinations and deadlines.
