By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about the future as I began my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Engaging with the unknown was not something I was used to as a previously reserved individual. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and an abundance of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently a significant concern for new university students. On my initial day of moving into my residence, I remained in my room the entire day, too daunted to venture out and socialize. Currently, I can assertively say I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all initiated by casual conversations with my peers. The takeaway? It’s important to take a chance at the onset of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared, don’t stress! There are numerous ice-breaking events designed to help you engage with others. Remember to be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the coursework and complexity of the material. There was a discernible leap from A-levels, and an even more significant increase from the first to the second term. Being in this kind of atmosphere can unsettle your confidence; you may feel inadequate when comparing yourself to others. What aided me was the realization that everyone else is navigating similar challenges. If you find something confusing, it’s likely others do too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is vital during your first year. Reach out for support from classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They consistently communicate regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I made a bold choice by becoming a year well-being representative, which facilitated my connection with staff—a valuable experience. There are numerous opportunities to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s one of the best steps you can take for your personal development! My primary message is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

Overall, this year illustrated to me that feelings of apprehension about university are often baseless and can be alleviated through the support provided by staff and peers. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone and learned how to find joy even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
