Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the cusp of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is among the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might pose a significant worry for you. On my moving-in day, a few days prior to the start of classes, I remained in my room for the entirety of the day, too fearful to step out and introduce myself to anyone. Now, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some incredible friendships here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with light conversation with others in comparable situations. So, what have I learned? It’s beneficial to take a chance at the start of the year. If you’re not ready or at ease, don’t be concerned! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker events to assist in connecting with others. I also realized that authenticity is vital. With such a broad spectrum of individuals across the program and the university, you’re sure to find peers who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a marked increase from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere can be challenging for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What supported me was recalling that everyone is navigating similar paths. If you’re struggling with something, chances are others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson from the first year. Reach out for help from both classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students confront. They show empathy and maintain regular communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke earlier about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the finest actions you can take for yourself! My primary message is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be lessened with assistance from faculty and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I’m never alone and how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
