Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was consumed by anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Diving into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This is often one of the most daunting elements of starting university, and if you’re a future student, it may be one of your greatest concerns. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, mere days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. However, today I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, both here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar predicaments. So, what did I take away from this? I realized that it’s essential to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, no need to fret! There will be plenty of opportunities and events designed to help you bond with others. I also discovered that authenticity is crucial. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. Transitioning from A-levels was certainly significant, and in some respects, the transition from the first term to the second was even greater. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few factors assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same struggles. If you’re unclear about something, I can nearly promise that others are too. So, seek assistance. This may be the singular most critical lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in the Materials department are fantastic. They are invested in your success and recognize the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and keep us informed throughout the year regarding our worries. I didn’t genuinely utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so sooner. I previously mentioned taking bold steps – I made one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated by the support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
