Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Diving into the unknown wasn’t something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and abundant enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the initial and most formidable hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most intimidating aspects of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student, it could be a significant worry. On my first day moving into my accommodation, merely days before the term started, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too nervous to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships here at the university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? It’s best to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t stress! Numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events will arise to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that authenticity is essential. With a plethora of diverse individuals across the course and university, you’ll encounter those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the workload and the challenging content. There was undoubtedly a jump from A-levels, and in some ways, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can impact your confidence; you might see others studying and feel inadequate. What supported me was recalling that everyone is experiencing the same situation. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you others are in the same boat. So, don’t hesitate to ask for help. This might be the most vital lesson of the first year. Seek support from classmates and staff!
That brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are extraordinary. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and understand the challenges students encounter. They empathize and keep in constant touch with us throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had earlier. I mentioned taking chances before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is priceless. There are many avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to leverage the assistance provided. You can never have too much backing!
Overall, this year has revealed to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated with the various support systems from staff and fellow students. It’s shown me that I’m never isolated and has taught me how to find enjoyment despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
