Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something my previously timid and quiet self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current situation?

A significant and intimidating challenge was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be one of your major worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days before the semester kicked off, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, scared at the prospect of going out and meeting others. However, as I sit here today, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in comparable circumstances. So, what did I discover? I found that it’s beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breakers and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the workload and the challenge of the material. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can challenge your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few factors aided me in navigating that feeling, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you there are others who also find it hard to comprehend. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in the first year. Request help from classmates and the faculty!

This leads to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely desire you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one at the year’s onset by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with staff, and it’s certainly among the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to capitalize on the assistance provided. You can never have too much of it!

In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently without basis and can be soothed with the various support options available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to enjoy myself amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
