Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyable moments! But what insights did this year provide me, and where do I find myself now?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is commonly one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the semester commencing, I spent the whole day secluding myself in my room, too apprehensive to step out and meet others. However, today I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known, both at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I glean? I learned that taking a chance at the outset of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be ample ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be yourself. With such a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to discover like-minded peers.

Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even larger jump from the first semester to the second. Being immersed in such an environment doesn’t always bolster your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors helped me navigate those feelings, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If you struggle to grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that there are others who are also confused. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to absorb in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of them earlier. I mentioned the importance of taking leaps earlier – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to build relationships with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and it’s certainly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main insight from this aspect of university is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much!

On a broader scale, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased by the various support options provided by staff and peers. It has shown me that I’m never isolated, and it has taught me how to enjoy myself amidst challenges like exams and deadlines.
