Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Entering the unknown was not something my previously introverted and withdrawn self was used to. Looking back, I realize I’ve experienced a year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting facets of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it might be one of your primary concerns. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too intimidated to venture out and meet others. However, sitting here today, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and it all began with some casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what have I taken away from this? I discovered that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the start of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events will be available to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if anything, just be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.

Another challenge I needed to navigate was the volume of work and complexity of content. There was definitely a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can be daunting for your self-esteem; you might observe your peers studying and feel inadequate. A few factors helped me cope with that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you don’t comprehend something, I can almost assure you that there are at least a handful of others who also don’t grasp it. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Ask for guidance from your fellow students and the faculty!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students face challenges. They show empathy toward students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned previously about taking risks – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous avenues to get to know the staff, and it’s assuredly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to fully leverage the support being offered. You can never receive too much!

In conclusion, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unwarranted and can be mitigated with the various support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and has shown me how to enjoy my time while managing stressors such as exams and deadlines.
