Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my academic journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I perceive a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of starting university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days before the term kicked off, I spent the entire day hiding in my room, too shy to step out and meet others. However, sitting here today, I can confidently declare that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with some casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I learn? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel quite ready or at ease, don’t stress! There will be ample ice-breaking chances and events to help you engage with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people like you.
Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was definitely a noticeable leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an atmosphere isn’t always easy for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few things aided me through that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, I can almost assure you that others do too. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They relate to students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I talked about taking leaps at the beginning; I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the assistance you’re being provided. You can never have too much!
In general, this year has revealed to me that nervous feelings, both leading up to and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be mitigated by the numerous support avenues accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone, and it has taught me how to find enjoyment alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
