Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt apprehensive and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I realize it has been a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re a future student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet people. Presently, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others facing similar circumstances. What did I figure out? It’s advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There are numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse population throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
An additional challenge was coping with the academic load and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being in this type of environment can influence your self-esteem; you might feel insufficient compared to your peers. Remember, everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you struggle with understanding something, it’s likely that others are as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from fellow students and faculty!
This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and are aware of the hardships students encounter. They show compassion and maintain ongoing communication regarding any challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. At the year’s start, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial steps you can take for yourself! My key takeaway is to capitalize on the assistance provided. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety about university are frequently misplaced and can be mitigated with the support offered by staff and students. I’ve discovered that I am never isolated and how to find joy amid the pressures of exams and deadlines.
